Sustainable Holiday Outfits for Kids

With October just ended, thoughts are slowly turning to the holiday season. I’ve never really bought the kids Holiday outfits. It helps that our extended families are pretty casual about get togethers. But it also helps to have a couple of good pieces that can be worn all the time but easily dressed up. This makes a lot more sense to me than buying a dress for a couple wears or a dress shirt that is worn once before it is outgrown.

More and more with the kids’ closets, and my own, I am looking for pieces that carry through the seasons. I am still learning how to layer well but have been pleasantly surprised that when I pack away our seasonal items there are fewer every season as most of the items can be worn year round. Especially with the weather fluctuations in Vancouver (ahem, global warming) a sweater is needed in the summer and I have found cottons and linens are wearable through the winter with clever layering with leggings, long sleeves and wool. Sometimes it’s a miss and I look more disheveled than clever but it’s all a process. I find awkward layering is always pulled off much better by our cute kiddos.

In the theme of having less clothes that go further, my friends at Petits Vilains asked which of their pieces I would choose for the kids to wear this holiday season that would be wearable before and after the holidays. They know me well and know that while I find holiday outfits adorable, our closets and my practical nature prevent me from getting seasonal outfits that only provide a day or two of use.

To dress up the beautiful everyday pieces I chose sparkly tights for Mae and special hair clips. If she wears this dress anywhere close to the amount of times she has worn her other dresses from PV I know the cost per wears will work in my favour. Sparkly tights are a great compromise for Mae and me as she loves glitter and I do not, but I don’t mind these subtly sparkly tights. For Theo a red toque that he can wear all the time and a shirt with buttons that he can wear other days, open like a jacket, yet feels special for a kid that is almost always in a t-shirt.

I am the biggest fan of the quality, fabrics and fit of Petits Villains as is demonstrated in my kid’s wardrobes. I feel lucky to call them friends and am grateful for their support of me and this space. If the clothes are out of your budget I would encourage you to look for them secondhand as they last through multiple kids. The lessons for holiday dressing are hopefully transferable to clothes that your kids already have in their closets. Adding a special hair clip or bow to an existing favourite dress or a button up to existing pants and shirt. The kids boots are the same ones they wear almost everyday and I think they still look great for any of the holiday parties (though I will definitely need to clean them before any parties!).

I took some pics of the kids in their Holiday outfits because they let me and it was fun! And now I have photos for the Christmas card (bonus!). Outfit details below.
