The Plan for the Shared Kids Room

Our new kids room is a really long low-ceiling room. It was one of the features I was drawn to in our new two bedroom because I thought I could eventually turn it into two bedrooms - ultimately creating an unconventional 3 bedroom without traditional hallways or doorways separating the rooms. For now though I love that Theo and Mae still share a room. They have to work together to clean it up. The need to share their toys and play together. I love the closeness that comes with sharing a room. There still haven’t been any requests for their own room. The only request that has come with the new space is that Mae feels like our bedroom is too far away (ha! it is probably 10 steps away rather than 5 steps at our old place).

With the plan to eventually split their room in two, I didn’t want to invest too much money into their current space. We installed their wall bunks, not because we needed the functionality anymore but because we own them and they are great beds. We re-installed the shelf beside it and hung up the Ikea Flisat shelves. I dreamt of a built-in plywood desk and storage situation that lined the long wall but opted for Ikea PS cabinets because a friend gave us one and I found another secondhand on Craigslist. So that’s how it sits for now. It’s fine. I miss their old tinier room with high ceilings. I found it much easier to decorate a more limited space than it is to decorate a HUGE room that is dark with low ceilings.

Anyway while I am accepting their current room I thought I would share some inspiration to divide their room in case that is something you might consider too. My thoughts are to add a bookshelf between the “two rooms” to allow some light through. One side of the room has a small window but the other side only has a glass door so I want as much light as possible in the second space. Another option is to add a wardrobe between the two rooms to act as a divider. I’m often saving divider concepts I see. Here are some of my favourites.

A partial wall with a glass top and a curtain could be a great solution for light and privacy but doesn’t address additional storage. I would also make the pony wall much higher.

Love this plywood shelf idea with the open top. Though would need it to be more narrow for our space.

This wardrobe wall is kind of what I had in mind as a wardrobe divider wall. Though I still need to think about a door way or where the wardrobe stops and starts.

All just dreaming and planning for now but was fun to but those thoughts to laptop. Thanks for indulging me!
